ORBITAL DISEASE & OCULOPLASTY
What is Oculoplastic Surgery?

orbit1Oculoplastic surgery is plastic surgery isolated to the areas around the eyes: the eyelids, orbit (bones behind the eye) and lacrimal (tear drain) system. The field of oculoplastic surgery combines the precision and microsurgery of ophthalmology with the aesthetic and reconstructive concepts of plastic surgery. Eyelid Ptosis Correction Surgery

orbit3
Have you ever noticed in older people that their eyelids start to droop over their eyes in some cases covering them almost completely? Have you seen certain children whose eyelids are more prolonged than others giving their eyes a half asleep look?
This is an eye condition or disorder and known as Ptosis pronounced as TOE SIS. It refers to drooping of the upper eyelid of one or both of the eyes of a person. The droop may vary from person to person. In some people it is barely noticeable while in some it covers their entire pupil.

This disease of the upper eyelid can affect both children and adults although it is associated usually with ageing. As you grow older, the muscles around the eyes start losing their tautness and this is what causes your eyes to drop as the skin stretches.
Lucky for you, there are several treatments available for ptosis today and it comes under the science of oculoplasty which deals with constructive, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery of the structures around the eye which includes eyelids and in ptosis’s case the upper eyelid. But first we shall find out causes and symptoms of ptosis.

Symptoms of Ptosis

Drooping eyelid-it is the most common and obvious symptom of ptosis. It makes seeing things difficult and sometimes you will find yourself raising your head to properly view an object. However, this symptom is also similar to a skin disease called dermatochalesis which is a group of skin connective tissues that causes the kin to hand or folds.
It is better to consult a good ophthalmologist before coming to any conclusions.

Causes of Ptosis

There are several causes of ptosis most common of them is older age. Following are some of the other common causes of ptosis

    Congenital ptosis i.e. from birth
  • Injury
  • Loosening of levators which are the eye muscles lifting the eyelid
  • aftereffect of cataract or any other corrective eye surgery
  • eye tumor
  • diabetes
  • neurological disorder

Entropion Lower Eyelid Reconstruction

orbit2Is your eye giving you trouble by an excessive amount of irritation? Although there are many eye disease which share this similar symptom you can simply narrow it down to one particular disease i.e. Entropion by checking the lower eyelid of your eye. Entropion is a condition in which a patient’s lower eyelid turns inwardly and rubs against the front of the eye i.e. cornea.

This disease usually affects the lower eyelids and the main reason behind the Entropion is most commonly a weakening of muscles around the eyelids and spasm.

With the advancement in technology nothing has become unfathomable in today’s age. Carrying forward the torch of extending modern medical facilities to one and all, DOVS,provides the best eye care services to its patients all round the world.

Although, it is best advised to consult a doctor or ophthalmologist before coming to any conclusions there are however certain symptoms which you can consider to identify Entropion

  • irritation and pain in the eye
  • redness of the eye
  • excessive tearing
  • extreme sensitivity to light and wind

Causes of Entropion

  • most common cause of entropion is ageing
  • any surgeries in the past
  • trauma or severe burns
  • inflammation
  • birth defects

One of the most common type of eye infection that leads to entropion is trachoma. This infection which affects the front of the eye results in scarring and disruption of the eyelids functioning.
